This handcrafted icon board is made from solid linden wood with oak inserts on the back, providing structural stability. The board features a recessed panel (kovcheg) in accordance with traditional iconographic canons.
In keeping with time-honored icon painting traditions, the board is first prepared by applying a layer of gauze fixed with gelatin-based adhesive. Over this, several layers of classic Levkas gesso — a smooth mixture of natural chalk and gelatin glue — are carefully applied, creating an ideal, perfectly smooth surface ready for tempera and oil painting.
The surface is meticulously sanded to ensure flawless smoothness. The sides and back of the icon board are finished with protective varnish to preserve the wood’s texture and ensure long-lasting durability.
