This handcrafted icon board of a special shape is made from solid linden wood with oak inserts on the back, providing structural stability. The panel features a recessed center (kovcheg) in accordance with traditional iconographic canons.
In keeping with time-honored icon painting traditions, a layer of gauze is applied to the board using gelatin-based adhesive. Several layers of classic Levkas gesso — a smooth mixture of natural chalk and gelatin glue — are then carefully applied to create a perfectly smooth surface ideal for tempera or oil painting.
The entire surface is meticulously sanded. The sides and back of the board are finished with 2–3 coats of protective varnish to ensure durability and enhance the wood’s texture.
Please note: the icon board shown in the photo has not yet been varnished. However, as part of our complimentary finishing service, each board will be coated with 2–3 layers of protective varnish before shipping.
